Women's Hair - The haircut

1940's
Women's Rockabilly Haircut
- They Called It "The
Middy"
The
Middy was considered the best, most popular hairstyle
of the decade, and if you want rockabilly hair to
match your rockabilly clothing, the first thing you'll
have to do is cut your hair in layers. You can't
have a rockabilly hairstyle without cutting your hair
in this way (sorry!) It's just not possible, and
your results won't look right. All the women who
had a 1940s rockabilly hairstyle used basically this
haircut, but then styled it differently. Most
all the other haircuts are variations of the Middy
(all with curls, all with layers). The Middy,
shown here, was considered:
-
Most
flattering
-
Most
popular
-
Offered
the most possibilities for styling
-
Could
be worn up or down
-
Short
enough to be practical (so you were supporting the
war effort), long enough to do some great
hairstyles
-
All
the other hairstyles were just variations of the
middy (3" long instead of 4", longer in
back, etc.)
Rules
of the Rockabilly Haircut:
-
Layers
are a must for all hairstyles of the 1940s.
What good is your rockabilly clothing if you have
a 21st century haircut?
-
Curls
are a must, too. If the women had
naturally straight hair back then, they permed
their hair or curled it. Straight hair just
wasn't allowed.
-
With
the exception of right in front of the ear
(3" long), all hair is 4" long.
As stated
above, virtually all 1940's hairstyles are variations of
this cut (perhaps longer in the back, or 3" long
everywhere instead of 4" long, etc.)
Next, curl
the hair.
