Rockabilly Apparel
A Musically Inspired Style
|
|
|
|
True rockabilly is a musical style
that roots itself in a movement that originated in the 50’s, when
musicians blended rock with rhythm and blues.
They took this style and stripped it back to a minimalist musical
style, and out of this creation came artists such as Buddy Holly and Jerry
Lee Lewis. Even some of
Elvis’ works are attributed to the rockabilly style of music.
Rockabilly apparel became a
well-known trait of these musical geniuses, credit. Not only was a musical style created; an entire fashion
movement was created. One of
the most noticeable pieces of rockabilly apparel is the pastel colored or
Daddy-O style shirt. Add to
that a pair of slacks, and the traditional rockabilly apparel is almost
complete. Top it off with a baggy coat, the shirt collar worn over the
coat collar to finish off the clothing.

Creeper shoes finish off the
rockabilly apparel. Though a
traditional black and white combination is still the most popular choice,
creeper shoes come in almost every color in the palette.
Rockabillies, or “Billies” for short, as they are often called,
are easily spotted in true rockabilly apparel, which fits the image of
this particular genre of rocker. However, they are frequently confused with Greasers, Teds
(Teddy Boys), and Rockers, other sub-cultures that are fairly well known
in mainstream society, all of which originated from the same era.
Rockabilly apparel is a musically inspired style
that creates a unique persona and maintains a visible presence for the
followers of the rockabilly movement.
Though the modern day rockabilly style is not as commonplace as it
once was, there are still stars working to keep the musical genre, as well
as the fashion statement, alive. In
the 1980’s, The Stray Cats were a very successful group playing music
that was said to take the lead in renewing the rockabilly movement. They wore the rockabilly apparel, kept the hairstyle, and
sang the music that had true rockabilly flair.
With such a prominent sub-culture, rockabilly apparel and music
will not disappear anytime in the near future.
