Rockabilly Clothes

A Fashion Sub-Culture

Rockabilly is often referred to as a musical style, but what about the sub-culture that inspires and is inspired by this music?  Even fashion is affected by such influences of the past and present.

Rockabilly clothes are reminiscent of the sub-cultures idols and predecessors.  Look back at popular 50s artists such as Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis, and you will find the roots of rockabilly clothes.  The style calls for slacks with pastel colored shirts.  Sometimes Daddy-O style shirts are worn, but whatever the pick for shirt attire, rockabilly clothes usually include the donning of a baggy coat, with the shirt collar worn over the coat collar.

Creeper shoes are an important part of rockabilly clothes.  They come in every color in the rainbow spectrum, but the classic black and white combinations are still the most popular choice.  Rockabilly clothes are often likened to those of other well-known sub-cultures and often confused for the likes of Greasers, Teds (Teddy Boys), and Rockers, all of which hail originally from the same era.

The distinct rockabilly clothes give these music lovers a unique style and a visible presence in the rock community.  The music and the clothes work together to create a persona that cannot be ignored.  Those in rockabilly clothes, listening to the music, are themselves referred to as Rockabillies or simply Billies.

Even some of the more contemporary well-known musical acts can be linked to the rockabilly fashion style.  The Stray Cats, a huge band in the 80s, were very closely linked with rockabilly because they played the musical style and wore the rockabilly clothes.

The fashion sub-culture created by the rockabilly movement is still strong today, with many artists worldwide keeping not only the music but the wear alive.  Just flip through the stations on the radio and the channels on the television, and you are bound to find a sample of rockabilly hiding in the airwaves.
