More Than Just a Style – A Way of Life

Though rockabilly is most well known as a musical genre, it has inspired a complete lifestyle, including lines of rockabilly clothing.  That’s right – even fashion comes out of this sub-culture that’s been created by avid followers and music lovers.

Rockabilly clothing imitates the popular 50’s artists such as Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis, classic rockabilly idols that started a tradition.  Typical rockabilly clothing consists of slacks and pastel colored or Daddy-O style shirts.  These items are usually topped off by a baggy coat, with the shirt collar worn over the coat collar.

Creeper shoes complete the rockabilly clothing.  Offered in practically every color under the sun, the classic black and white creeper shoes are still the most popular choice.  Those dressed in rockabilly clothing (often referred to as Rockabillies or simply Billies) are frequently confused with other well-known sub-culture styles, like Greasers, Teds (Teddy Boys), and Rockers, all of which originated from the same era.

Rockabilly clothing creates a unique style and a visible presence in the rock community for these distinctive music lovers.  This sub-culture has become such a movement that it almost seems to be growing and will simply not be ignored.  In the 1980’s, one of the more successful bands, The Stray Cats, can attribute their style to the rockabilly clothing influence.  They wore the clothes and the hair and sang the music that rockabilly lovers crave.

Rockabilly music has created a sub-culture and fashion movement that is not fading anytime soon.  Many artists throughout the world are working hard to keep rockabilly alive.  With such a strong following of very serious musicians dedicated to their lifestyle, and full fashion lines creating rockabilly clothing, rockabilly is more than just a style – it’s a way of life!
