Rockabilly Fashion

A Style Unto Itself

Over the years, rockabilly music has faded in and out of style, with the original 50’s artists like Elvis and Buddy Holly either moving on to other genres or passing on before their time and later artists (like The Stray Cats in the 1980’s, whose clothes and music followed the trend) falling from the scope of what’s “popular”.  However, one thing that has never disappeared from the horizon is rockabilly fashion.  In its own way, rockabilly fashion sparked a trend in the mid-1950’s that has never completely disappeared.

Rockabilly fashion typically consists of slacks coupled with pastel colored or Daddy-O style shirts.  A baggy coat will top off the look, with the shirt collar worn over the top of the coat collar.  Creeper shoes complete the rockabilly fashion appearance, available in all colors but still preferred in black and white.  Those following the rockabilly fashion trend are often (though not always) referred to as “rockabillys” or simply “billies”.

Even some popular artists who have nothing to do with the rockabilly musical flavor can be spotted sporting the rockabilly fashion trend.  Take, for example, Weezer, an exploding pop-rock band that became popular in the late 1990’s and has seen a world of rising success in this new millennium.  These rockers, producing some of the most favored music of the era, dress in a manner that is very reminiscent of the late Buddy Holly.  In most of their appearances, especially seen in music videos, these rock icons are seen in the pastel shirts and slacks, and, frequently, even “Buddy Holly” style glasses.

It is artists like these that keep rockabilly fashion alive.  Regardless of the popularity of the music, the sub-culture rockabilly created is still rampant in the fashion world today and most likely will not disappear any time in the near future.
