Rockabilly Stuff

What Constitutes “Rockabilly”?

Rockabilly is a genre of music that inspired an entire cultural movement in the mid-1950’s.  With artists like Elvis, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and many more jumping on the bandwagon, rockabilly stuff became very popular.  But what exactly is rockabilly stuff?

Rockabilly stuff would include items of clothing that fit the style, a certain hairdo, elements of the music, and instruments in the band.  Let’s start simple – men wore a lot of brylcreme or other thick grease in their hair to keep it perfectly done in a pompadour style.  Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash are two of the best examples of famous figures sporting the ‘do.

From there, we can move on to the clothing.  Rockabilly stuff includes either a pastel collared shirt or a Daddy-O style shirt (think bowling shirts – these are very similar).  Over the shirt, toss on a baggy sport coat, then flip the collar of your shirt so that it is on top of the jacket collar.  Add a pair of slacks, and pull on some creeper shoes to complete the look.

What other rockabilly stuff is there?  Well, take a look at the band.  In a rockabilly band, you won’t find an electric bass.  You’ll find an upright bass, played slap style most of the time.  You’ll find a rhythm guitar and a lead guitar.  The vocalist will be someone who isn’t shy – much of rockabilly music includes what most people would consider odd yelping and gulping sounds.  To hear a true sample of rockabilly music, listen to Carl Perkins’s Blue Suede Shoes.  This is considered somewhat of a rockabilly anthem.

Other rockabilly stuff is hard to define.  There is a certain attitude of a “rockabilly” or “billy”, as followers of the trend are often called.  Also, the topics of the music can’t be easily defined.  Most rockabilly bands sing about any old thing that inspires a good tune with a strong beat.  Whatever you may find in your search for rockabilly stuff, you’re sure to have a load of fun doing it!
