Rockabilly Swing Dress
Women’s Rockabilly Wear
|
|
|
|
Rockabilly women
opened up the options for women to dress as they pleased, making it
acceptable for women to wear pants in public.
They were the pioneers of the pedal pushers, cropped pants that
were worn in length just below the knee down to mid-calf.
However, one of the most popular pieces of clothing was the
rockabilly swing dress.
A rockabilly swing dress, although
fairly modest, had a semi-low cut neckline, allowing women to show a
little skin while still remaining chaste, as was required in society in
the 1950’s. The rockabilly
swing dress also offered more flexibility than the standard straight line
wool skirt worn by many other women who followed the fashion trend. With the flair of the skirt in the rockabilly swing dress,
women could dance more freely and walk without any restriction in their
step.

A rockabilly swing dress was
usually mid-calf length, leaving the bottom of the stocking-clad legs
exposed. These dresses were
worn with typical peek toe shoes, with thick high heels and a small
opening in the toe. These
were good for dancing and gave a great shape to the leg.
Once dressed in the appropriate
manner, rockabilly women are ready to party in style. Right next to their male counterparts, “billies” dance
and sing along with songs consisting of lyrics about anything from cars to
women, interspersed with gulps and yelps characteristic of the musical
genre.
The rockabilly swing dress was a staple of the
rockabilly style in the 1950’s, and though they aren’t seen often
today, if you look in vintage shops or search online, you can find some of
the dresses left over from the era of rockabilly, or even modern
imitations. Rockabilly lives
on, and if you want to keep the true spirit of the style, you might want
to find yourself a rockabilly swing dress or some other form of rockabilly
wear and go out in full attire.
