Rockabilly Wear

A Distinct Style

Those who are familiar with rockabilly know that it is not just a musical genre – it has inspired a complete lifestyle, including rockabilly wear.  Yes, even a fashion trend emerged from this sub-culture of followers and music lovers.

What constitutes rockabilly wear?  It consists of an imitation of the popular 50’s artists like Buddy Holly or Jerry Lee Lewis, considered true rockabilly idols.  Typical rockabilly wear consists of slacks paired with pastel colored or Daddy-O style shirts and topped off by a baggy coat, with the shirt collar worn over the coat collar.

Creeper shoes are also a distinct part of rockabilly wear.  Though coming in practically every color of the spectrum, classic black and white creeper shoes still seem to be the most popular option.  Rockabillies, or “Billies” for short, are frequently confused with other well-known sub-culture styles, like Greasers, Teds (Teddy Boys), and Rockers, all of which originated from the same era, but there is definitely a noticeable difference.

Rockabilly wear creates a uniqueness and presence within the rock community that simply cannot be equaled.  The clothing has had nearly as much influence on society as the music itself.  This sub-culture, though having practically died right along with Buddy Holly in the 1959 plane crash, almost seems to be growing now.  In the 1980’s, The Stray Cats saw great success in their music, and they can attribute their style to the rockabilly influence.  They single-handedly revived not only the music, but also the rockabilly wear.

Rockabilly music has become a genre of its own and cannot be categorized as one specific type of music.  The influence of this movement has been so strong as to create a lasting fashion statement with rockabilly wear.  With the kind of following it has, rockabilly wear and music are not soon to fade from view.
