Rockabilly Baby Clothes

Cute and Cuddly

Rockabilly baby clothes are, unfortunately, not as noticeable as and harder to come by than adult rockabilly clothes.  How do you dress a baby to fit a certain sub-culture that the child is not even old enough to understand?  It may seem like it’s pointless, but parents who followed the trend in the 1950’s tried to make sure their children were identified with rockabilly clothes.  Rockabilly may have started out as just a style of music, but people daring to rebel and dress like their favorite stars caused rockabilly to set off a major fashion trend that many still follow today.  Unfortunately, if you’re looking for authentic rockabilly baby clothes, you won’t find the standard men’s Daddy-O shirts and creepers in tiny sizes.  You probably won’t find anything for your little girl that closely resembles a rockabilly swing dress, either.

What you may find is little toddler dresses that have very flared skirts made to resemble the swing dress, or flowered pinafores with ruffled sleeves.  For little boys, short sets were common.  Both sexes wore rompers that resembled overalls, girls wearing ruffled blouses beneath and boys button down shirts.  These rompers were probably the most common rockabilly baby clothes.

Baby clothes have not changed a lot with the times, and infants and small children still wear a lot of the same styles today.  Such a lack of changing trends, like those for older children and adults, makes it hard to really define rockabilly baby clothes well.  However, if you see a child in a romper whose father is wearing creeper shoes and a pompadour hair cut, these may be rockabillies.  If a little girl in a pinafore is seen with her mother wearing capris and a Daddy-O style shirt, they may be rockabillies.  Rockabilly baby clothes may not be as easily spotted, but in conjunction with their rockabilly parents, they won’t go unnoticed.
