Rockabilly Purse

Embroidered and Beautiful

 

A rockabilly purse was more than just a handbag.  It was a work of art and a statement.  Rockabilly purses usually carried some sort of message to the world, and that message was usually some form of rebellion.

Rockabilly purses were embroidered with designs like motorcycles, Spanish dancers, skulls, mermaids, butterflies – you name it, and it could be found on a rockabilly purse.  Many of the designs were related to pirates, like skulls and crossbones, anchors, and treasure chests.

Other rockabilly purses may simply have something like a patch woven onto the handbag in the shape of a heart with a banner across it that made a statement.  Perhaps it would say “lust”, or read “true”, or sometimes give a simple message such as “faith”.  Rockabilly purses often varied greatly in design, as well as topic, simply depending on the type of message a woman wanted to send.  The idea of rockabilly was to be yourself and not worry what other people thought, and this came out mostly in the artwork, like tattoos and handbags.  Accessories played a major role in the rockabilly lifestyle.

Some rockabilly purses were modeled with an Asian influence.  With material designed like traditional Asian wear (like kimonos), the purse often looked expensive and gave the rockabilly woman an air of affluence.  Some rockabilly purses were simply bright and ruffled.  Others were a work of art, the whole bag resembling a painting.  The rockabilly purse did not include just one style.  They were made to fit all types of personalities.

Just like any other woman, the rockabilly women of the 1950’s had different tastes.  While sticking to a theme, they managed to have a variety of messages to spread and many different styles to choose from.  However, all had the same love – rockabilly music.
