Rockabilly T-Shirt

A Modern Statement

Rockabilly began in 1954 with Elvis Presleys Memphis recordings, and at the time, everybody following the trend dressed alike.  Men wanted to look like their idols, Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis.  They wore Daddy-O shirts with oversized sport coats (shirt collar worn out), slacks, and creeper shoes.  Women tended to wear swing dresses with peek toe shoes or pedal pushers with gingham blouses.  Today, it cant be expected for rockabillies to dress like they did in the 1950s on a daily basis.  Besides not fitting into the mainstream anymore, Daddy-O style shirts are worn for bowling, so the style has gotten confused.  Women wear capris every day, so the pants dont set them apart as rockabilly women anymore.

Today, many people choose to wear a rockabilly t-shirt.  All t-shirts have a topic, with the exception of those intended to be undershirts (like Hanes and other plain white t-shirts).  A rockabilly t-shirt references the same topics as that of a rockabilly song or tattoo.  Rockabilly artwork and music was about anything and everything, but the prevailing topics were music, girls, and cars.

A picture on a rockabilly t-shirt today may be a replica of a vintage pinup girl, or may simply read  rockabilly.  They may even show the rockabilly legends from the 1950s, like Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, or Carl Perkins.  The most come thing for rockabilly t-shirts to advertise, though, is either cars or motorcycles.  Indian Motorcycles, Johnson Motors, Hemis, and Roadsters are just a few examples of things you might find on a rockabilly t-shirt.

If a rockabilly t-shirt doesnt have a vehicle on it, its most likely going to have a pinup girl, 1950s style.  Often, these cartoonish images will also show dice and maybe cards, advertising something about gambling or Las Vegas.  The shirts are made to show not only the interests of the wearer, but also the rebellious nature of a rockabilly.
